A Physicist’s Guide to Life on Earth

Each of us has three life support systems: our own body, our planet, and the infrastructure of our civilisation. We are completely dependent on them, and these three systems all operate under the same physical laws. A large-scale physics perspective on our planetary system presents a different way to look at the problems we now face, setting out the most fundamental constraints on our lives. The Earth is a highly complex engine, which is very effective at providing the conditions that life needs. Our technology may advance, but the fundamental rules for living on a planet stay the same, and they’ve been running things on Earth for billions of years. What can we learn from that perspective when it comes to the technology we develop and how we use it?
