Decarbonising industry: the really big climate challenge
Cement and steel are the essential building block of human societies,. They also represent 15% of all global emissions and yet, have received much less attention than sectors such as transportation and power.
In a recent interview with Reuters for the publication of his book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster, Bill Gates asked “who’s doing the hard stuff” referring to emissions from manufacturing, particularly industries such as cement and steel. We can’t achieve net zero goals without decarbonizing manufacturing.
How can we set an ambitious and realistic path to reach zero-carbon manufacturing globally by 2050? How can industrial policies, R&D funding, business support and investment accelerate the zero-carbon transition in these industries?
